When you are choosing the outfits you bring to your photo session here are some things to think about. How the colors interact with the overall colors in the surrounding area. Cool on cool or warm on warm can create a minimalist aesthetic. Where as a cool on warm or the opposite creates more contrast.
Cool hues include blues, greens and purples. Warm tones are variations of reds, oranges, and yellows. In the Katie's photos her terra cotta colored dress goes well with warm tones of the Arizona landscape. To create a completely different feel she changed into a denim blue outfit that contrasts with the warmth of the setting sun and landscape. This outfit helps her pop out of the photo more.
I would highly suggest to choose outfits in both warm and cool colors so you can have a variety of images to choose from. My favorite colors to wear are within the blue and green hues but I would also try to pull some wine in too just to keep some added interest.
Lastly, think about the end product you want from your session. Are you a senior wanting announcements? Maybe you want to consider your school colors and how that might play into your image choice down the road. Maybe these images are going to be used in your marketing materials for your business, what is your overall aesthetic? Does your color choice make sense with your brand? These images could be to hang in your den, what color is your wall? Or are there other images that will surround the image that you should consider? It can be overwhelming to think this all through.
