You are not alone if you struggle with how to do your makeup for your portrait. I have seen it all, the good, bad and mediocre.
Before we get into it lets talk about your skin. Please hydrate as best as possible the week leading up to your portrait session. This lessens your chance of dry skin, breakouts and you will feel better overall. The glow you feel inside from treating your body well really does translate outward. Next, avoid any harsh facial treatments for up to 2 weeks before your session. Moisturize your skin well the night before and in the morning.
Now, that you have a healthy and happy base we can think about makeup! Ask yourself do you want your eyes or lips to be the center of attention? Don't make them compete for the spotlight! If you love wearing a brilliant lip color then go for it but let your eye makeup play a supporting role. Or vice versa if you love a bold smokey eye let that take the lead. Most important don't wear makeup that doesn't match with you. For example, I adore a bold lip color but never wear more than gloss so I would feel really uncomfortable in my portraits.
Blemishes or marks please, please do not take the time to cover them. Be open with me and I can more easily correct them in photoshop if your skin is clean than when it has layers of coverup.
Lastly, makeup trends. Please contemplate whether the way you are wearing your makeup is timeless. Your portraits will be around for generations. This season a little shine on your nose might be in but next season matte skin could be.
How ever you wear your face, take a practice round. If you need a second opinion snap a selfie and send it my way.
