Part of getting ready for your Portrait is working on expression. Many times we say 1,2,3 smile! But there are varying degrees of a smile, right. There is a polite small smile, a dreamy smile, and all the way up to a hysterical laughing smile. I would say a smile of any kind in person is heart-warming but it does not always translate in still imagery.
Regardless of the wattage of smile sitting on your lips, if there is no light in your eyes to match, it will not be believable. So look in your mirror and practice working your eye expression. Models are pros at smizing so take a look in your magazines. Here are a few tips to get you started.
1. Begin by relaxing your facial muscles. Ensure that your forehead and jaw are not tense.
2. Choose a point to focus on. This helps create intensity in your gaze.
3. Think of something that makes you smile naturally. A funny joke or activity that makes you happy.
4. If you’re in front of a camera, think about the vibe or emotion you want to convey. Your smize should reflect that.
5. Try different angles and expressions to see what works best for you. Smizing can vary depending on mood and context.
6. Keep it Natural. The key is to remain relaxed and not overthink it. The most genuine smizes come naturally!
